Humans readily perceive illusory outlines by completing fragmented visual information through perceptual grouping mechanisms such as continuity, closure, and proximity. We modernize the Stochastic Completion Fields algorithm to model these processes, showing that it plausibly reflects human perception while improving contour completion, inpainting, and edge detection in noisy images.

Long commute times reduce well-being, yet efforts to improve transit often fail because congestion grows and commuters adapt their behavior in ways that can worsen overall outcomes. This thesis introduces a new autonomous-vehicle-based model that accounts for individual decision-making to compare transit systems and explore which designs best minimize commute times.
